Project Overview

The Click-Lock Rotation Holder was designed to provide users with a stable and adjustable platform for holding smartphones in both vertical and horizontal orientations.

The design emphasizes rotational flexibility, secure angle locking, and charging accessibility, making it suitable for use during video calls, filming, or desktop use.

Requirements and Technical Challenges

Dual Orientation Support

The holder must allow the phone to rotate between portrait and landscape modes and securely lock at various angles.

Charging Clearance

The phone must remain fully usable and chargeable while docked in either orientation.

Ensuring Proper Energy Generation and Transfer

The shape, pitch, and angle of the windmill blades were optimized to capture wind efficiently and transfer rotational motion effectively to the motor shaft. Achieving a balance between aerodynamic efficiency and manufacturability was key.

Key Features

  • Using affordable materials such as wood and plastic, making the production affordable
  • Combining education and entertainment
  • Easy assembly, few components, suitable for kids of any age
  • Integration of motor which ensures further exploration of the concept of energy

Development Process

Phase 1: Requirements Analysis

Analyzed existing products to identify gaps in functionality and design. Established key requirements: dual orientation, charging compatibility, and stability.

Phase 2: Initial Modeling

Focused on defining the clamp dimensions to fit a generic smartphone, creating a secure holding mechanism. Developed the radial gear interface to allow for easy rotation and locking.

Phase 3: Prototyping & Testing

Tested the system under a controlled wind source (fan). Refined blade angles and gear ratios for optimal performance.

Final Assembly and Results

The final design consists of a base stand, a vertical support, a rotating joint with gear teeth for locking, and a phone holder frame with sufficient clearance for wired charging. The resulting assembly is robust, versatile, and ready for 3D printing, offering practical usability for a variety of daily phone usage scenarios.
